After a bank robbery goes wrong, fugitive Joe Maybe is mistaken for a famed U.S. Marshal and forced to play the role of a respected lawman in a tight-knit town. The charade grows dangerously complex when his former flame unexpectedly surfaces, forcing them to pose as a happily married couple while navigating a growing bond with a local orphan boy.
