The Yura family of Kyoto is a lineage of spirit mediums dating back to the Heian period; they practice *kuchiyose*, a ritual in which a spirit possesses the medium's body so that its words can be spoken. Masako, who detested this family tradition, defied her relatives' objections to marry her lover a year ago—only for him to meet a mysterious death.
