The narrator, a Korean American, is insecure in his Korean identity and does not feel like a real Korean. His father uses chopsticks the true "Korean" way, while he struggles to use them properly. On a trip to the homeland, he finally learns to use chopsticks and even learns to speak Korean. His newfound knowledge and confidence in his Korean identity are tested when he and his friends go to a Korean restaurant upon his return.
